Oratory of Saint Michael at Pozzoveggiani

The Oratory of Saint Michael at Pozzoveggiani is a clear example of the influences of the Frankish culture of Charlemagne’s epoch on the local styles, strongly marked by the Byzantine rule. Built in the 12th century over a memorial cell with the apse facing west, it was transformed, reversing the positions of the façade and the altar so that it faced east, as it normal. The oddity concerns the subject of the frescoes: among typically religious subject we find a series of armed knights and zoomorphic and anthropomorphic figures lacking any sacred or narrative reference.
