Collection of Models of Agricultural Machines and Tools at Legnaro

The Department for territory and agricultural and forest systems located in Agripolis (Legnaro – Padua), hosts 275 models of old farming machines and tools. The Collection of Models of Agricultural Machines and Tools at Legnaro is part of the bequest left by the ‘Regio Orto Agrario’ (Royal Agricultural Garden) of Padua founded in 1766 by Pietro Arduino. The 180-year-old garden was one of the first institutions in Europe to experiment in the agricultural field. The models are made of wood, iron, and often of both materials together, exactly reproducing the various elements forming the original objects. Their size ranges from four centimetres up to one metre for the biggest items. The largest group of models is the collection of ploughs, the main agricultural tool, which counts 29 pieces with technical properties unique for the time. The machines used for farming works – such as straw-choppers, ‘washing machines’ for potatoes and turnips, brakes, mangles, beehives, churns and presses – represent very interesting pieces for ethnographic studies and allow drawing a comprehensive outline of the agricultural culture in past ages. The collection also includes 138 models of manual tools used for different agricultural works and for parks and gardens maintenance.
